Beginning Again

How many times have I felt the feeling of starting the yoga again?  Even though I’ve maintained an almost daily practice for decades, I have waves of changes and challenges that make me feel like I am starting over time and time again.

As I start the new year, this quote by Bikram Choudhury keeps play in my mind: “You’re never too old, never too bad, never too late and never too sick to start from scratch once again.”  It’s a quote that has been in the background of my practice my whole adult life.

There was that time after I finished my 1st yoga training and my knees were so inflamed I could barely walk to class, it was time to start “again.”  The time I had so much stress in my body from the grief at the death of my father, and it was time to get to the mat and start “again.”  The times recovering from different surgeries, get to the mat to begin “again.”  And even the mundane changes such as being tired after a long day at work or recovering after a cold, the quote ran through my mind that I could always begin “again.”

This year, I have a feeling of starting from “scratch once again” although I can’t pinpoint a cause for the shift.  It’s more of a feeling that I’m different and my yoga is reflecting this on the mat.  The grounding force behind my practice is the trust I have in myself that I will continue the yoga path, and that the answers that I’m seeking are always through the practice.
